HSBC and Visa Test Industry-First Agentic Commerce Solution

HSBC UK is testing AI-powered shopping through a partnership with Visa that could allow customers to delegate purchasing tasks to artificial intelligence platforms.
The bank completed what it describes as one of the first live end-to-end agentic transactions on a merchant website using an HSBC UK card. The trial represents an early test of technology that could change how consumers interact with digital retail.
The concept centres on AI agents handling tasks such as comparing products across multiple websites, booking travel or ordering household items. Customers would set permissions and approve transactions rather than manually browsing and purchasing.
Commerce with pre-set controls
For merchants, the technology could reduce cart abandonment and friction in the purchasing funnel. For financial institutions, the challenge lies in building security infrastructure that prevents AI from operating outside customer-defined boundaries.
Andy Rankin, Chief Payments Officer at HSBC UK, says: "The way people pay is constantly evolving, and AI has the potential to make everyday shopping simpler, faster and more convenient for our customers."
"At HSBC UK, we're helping to shape the future of payments by bringing together innovation, trusted technology and industry collaboration."
"AI-powered commerce is set to be the next evolution in how people shop, and we're working alongside our partners to help build the experiences that will make it a reality, while ensuring customers remain firmly in control of their money."
Authentication and customer permissions
The partnership is building authentication measures that include customer biometrics to ensure AI agents cannot execute payments without strict pre-approval.
Andy tells Marketing Chief: "Just as online shopping and mobile payments transformed the way we buy, AI-powered commerce has the potential to become the next major evolution.
"As the technology matures, it could help unlock productivity across the economy by making purchasing faster and simpler for consumers while creating new opportunities for businesses to engage customers.
"We expect AI to become a natural part of many everyday shopping journeys, but widespread adoption will depend on building trusted experiences where customers remain in control of every payment decision."
Network infrastructure for merchants
HSBC UK and Visa plan to scale the technology through existing card networks, avoiding the need for merchants to overhaul payment systems. The approach relies on security protocols already used by businesses globally.
Rob Cameron, Group Country Manager, UK & Ireland, at Visa, comments: "AI agents are beginning to initiate transactions in real-world environments, and our role is to ensure every transaction remains secure, transparent and trusted.
"By connecting our issuer partners like HSBC UK, with merchants and AI systems through our network, we are enabling this next phase of commerce using the infrastructure and protections already in place."
The pilot does not include a confirmed timeline for broader rollout. HSBC UK states that customer confidence in payment protection will determine how quickly agentic commerce could be adopted.
