Canva & Meta: A New Playbook For High-Performing Reels Ads

In a recent joint webinar, Erin Harlan from Canva’s B2B Product Marketing team and Cecilia LV, Strategic Partnerships Lead at Meta, set out practical creative guidance for teams under pressure to make more video faster without sacrificing performance.
Meta’s internal analyses suggest creative quality drives around 56% of campaign outcomes, more than targeting or bidding, a pattern consistent with industry evidence since 2017.
Meta’s brand-lift work shows campaigns using Reels ads deliver a 24% higher median brand lift versus business-as-usual formats, underlining the format’s impact on awareness and consideration.
In related research commissioned by Meta, 61% of surveyed heavy short-form video users said Reels ads led them to further consider brands they already knew.
A simple formula for Reels creative
Harlan and LV highlighted three fundamentals:
Design for full-vertical (9:16)
Use sound or music
Keep key elements in the on-screen “safe zone”
These best practices are built into Canva’s Meta Design Check app, which flags safe-zone issues and provides instant tips against Meta’s guidelines, directly inside Canva.
Performance upside from getting the basics right is material: Meta guidance shared at industry sessions indicates 9:16 video with audio can cut cost-per-result by about 34% versus image ads and “creative-essential” setups see up to two times higher delivery to the Reels placement than less-optimised video.
To speed production, Canva now surfaces Reels templates aligned to proven “story types” such as product listicles, tutorials and photo-dumps, giving non-specialist teams a fast route to native-feeling vertical video.
Streamlining the workflow
The collaboration is designed to remove friction from draft to flight:
Meta Design Check inside Canva’s Apps Marketplace gives instant creative feedback and visual safe-zone previews for Reels and Stories placements
AI-generated captions improve accessibility and watchability without extra tools
Built-in trimming and AI Highlights speed edit cycles for short-form cuts
Enterprise controls – brand kits, roles and permissions, approvals and real-time collaboration – keep high-volume creative on brand and moving
“With built-in approvals, real-time collaboration and integrations like Meta Design Check, teams can streamline production and keep designers focused on the highest-impact work,” Erin said.
The bigger picture for marketing teams
Short-form video is now central to Meta usage and to how audiences discover products. The Canva–Meta integration points to a playbook where platform-specific creative beats one-size-fits-all assets, and where lightweight iterative production wins on speed and cost.
For marketing leaders, the implication is clear: invest in repeatable creative systems for vertical video, then use on-platform checks and template-driven formats to protect quality at scale.
